Brand New Phone--and no service?

so today i got my brand new phone: verizon wireless Octane. It was awesome when i got it, but now that i'm home; i have NO service and i have been texting from my ipod. I live in the boonies...but still my old phone- i got perfect service. on my screen theres: 3G and below theres something that looks like a 1X. and they both have at least one bar...so i don't know why i wouldn't have service. There's plenty of cell phone towers here....and the last phone had perfect service like i said earlier. I don't know what's going on with it. Thanks!
