What are the dangers of using less than 91 octane? (GTI)?

All modern cars have anti-knock sensors and electronic ignition. If a lower grade of fuel in put in, the computers simply retard the spark which essentially turns your engine into a lower compression engine. You won't get as much power, but the efficiency difference is negligible.
